Currently considered as one of the prime tourist attractions in the city of Fujairah, Fujairah Fort sits on a small rocky hill, about 2 km from the city of Fujairah. This Fort is one of the oldest as well as the largest castles of United Arab Emirate (UAE) to date.
The exact date of the construction of the Fujairah Fort was somewhere around 1500-1550 while it was later renovated in 1650-1700. The Fort is packed with several houses, a mosque, and a central hall fortified with three round towers and a square tower on the sides.
If we take a look at its profound history, not only did it serve as a home to the royal family, but it is also known to have resisted the British wave of colonialism in the 20th century.
From 1808 to 1810, the fort remained under the possession of the Wahabbists. More than a century later, in 1925, there was an incident of bombardment on the castle by the British to enforce the anti-slavery policy – three of the guard towers were brought down by the attacks of HMS Lawrence.
The matter was settled when the sheikh finally agreed to pay the 1500 rupees as a fine. Later, between 1997 and 2000, the Fort was reinstated to its original state using the same materials it was built with, in the first place.
